Trainer, Staff & Facilities
Gary Portelli is one of Sydney's premier trainers. With a stable full of talent, Gary is a regular in the winner's circle at Sydney metropolitan and provincial tracks. Team Portelli has also taken their winning formula to Melbourne where satellite stables are based. Although horses are based in Sydney, having stables in Melbourne provides a distinct 'edge' in allowing the Portelli team to take full advantage of the prize money on offer in Australia's two premier racing states.
Warwick Farm boasts state of the art training facilities and is home to some of the country’s most successful training operations.
Gary is well respected within the industry. He is associated with some of the world's best and well known bloodstock agents, one of those being Vin Cox. Vin Cox is the Australasian representative for North America's leading thoroughbred auction house Keenland and currently maintains professional relationships in America, Europe, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, Korea, China and New Zealand. The Gary Portelli and Vin Cox "combination" are responsible for the selection of many successful horses.
Team Portelli has access to some very talented jockeys, some of them being Blake Shin, Nash Rawiller, Jeff Lloyd, Chris Munce, Michael Rodd, Corey Brown, Hugh Bowman, Peter Robl and Jay Ford. Gary Portelli's biggest success to date was that of the very smart filly Rena's Lady winning the 2006 Group 1 AJC Oaks. More recently, Gold Trail scored an emphatic win in the Group 1 Railway Handicap Stakes. Gary has produced many city winners including include Over The Wicket, Around The Wicket, Triple Crown, Koblenz, Mirrasalo, Delago Bolt, Allervite, Sacred Orders, Something Anything, Romanus, O'Crickey, Gold Trail, Hairy, and Aristocratico just to name a few.
One of the better advantages of working with Portelli Racing is Gary's ability to spot the talent in the sale yard without 'breaking the bank'. Group winners such as Something Anything (Group 2 Villiers Stakes), Rena's Lady (Group 1 AJC Oaks & Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes) and Gold Trail (Group 1 Railway Stakes, Group 2 The Shorts Stakes, Listed Canterbury Stakes & 3rd in the Group 1 Galaxy Stakes) were purchased for as little as $40,000 at the Inglis and Magic Millions sales. Essentially, this why we involve Gary Portelli in the selection of our yearlings.
There is no doubt that the 2009\2010 season is shaping up to be the most successful to date, with an array of talented horses making their way the stables. We are very excited to have Portelli Racing apart of the Elite Thoroughbreds team. We are certain that Gary's solid and consistant record will continue to flourish and have a positive influence on your racehorse.
